Your first option to check. Major JR and subway stations in Tokyo have coin lockers both inside and outside the ticket gates. Prices vary by size and station, but roughly:

Most lockers now accept Suica, PASMO, and other IC cards in addition to ¥100 coins. IC-compatible lockers lock and unlock with a tap — no physical key to lose.
When Large Lockers Are Full
Stations like Shinjuku and Tokyo have thousands of lockers, but the large sizes are limited. On weekends and during tourist season, they can fill up by late morning.
You can check availability in advance. JR East Group’s Multi Ecube shows real-time locker availability by station and lets you reserve a locker (¥500 reservation fee + normal usage fee). Covers major stations including Tokyo, Shinjuku, Shibuya, Shinagawa, Ueno, and Ikebukuro.
Luggage Storage Services
Even when lockers are full, you can store bags at nearby shops through a storage service.

The process is simple: pick a shop and time slot in the app, show the reservation screen to the staff when dropping off, and show it again when picking up.
The main advantage over coin lockers is flexibility on size. Oversized suitcases, ski bags, or anything that won’t fit in a locker can be stored at a participating shop.
Airport-to-Hotel Delivery
You land at 10 AM and hotel check-in is at 3 PM. Dragging a large suitcase through trains and crowds for five hours is no one’s idea of fun. This is one of the most common travel pitfalls visitors encounter. You can hand off your bags at the airport and have them delivered straight to your hotel.
Yamato Transport’s Airport Takkyubin
Yamato Transport’s Airport Takkyubin lets you drop your suitcase at the airport counter and have it delivered to your hotel or accommodation.

JAL ABC Airport Delivery
JAL ABC also handles airport-to-hotel (and hotel-to-airport) delivery. Covers 6 airports: Narita, Haneda, Kansai, Chubu, New Chitose, and Itami.
- Sizes: 120 (up to 20 kg), 140 (up to 25 kg), 160 (up to 30 kg)

Which Option to Choose
A quick decision guide.
Coin lockers work best when: You only need a few hours of storage. You’re staying near a train station. Your bags fit inside a locker. You want the cheapest option (¥300–¥1,000).
Luggage storage services work best when: Lockers are full. Your bags are too big for a locker. You need storage away from a station.
Airport delivery works best when: You have hours between landing and check-in. You don’t want to haul a large suitcase on trains. You want your last day luggage-free too. Next-day delivery is fine (or you qualify for Haneda’s same-day service).
When Things Go Wrong
All coin lockers are full: If you can’t find a large locker at a major station, try the next station over. If Shinjuku is full, Yoyogi or Shin-Okubo often have openings. Otherwise, search for nearby shops on a luggage storage app.
Can’t unlock an IC-card locker: You must use the same IC card (Suica/PASMO) you locked it with. If you carry multiple cards, remember which one you used. If you’ve lost the card, call the management company listed on the locker.
Airport delivery didn’t arrive at the hotel: Standard delivery is next-day, not same-day. If you shipped on arrival day expecting it to be there by evening, it won’t be — unless you used Haneda’s same-day service (drop off by 11:00 AM, limited areas). For same-day needs, use a coin locker or the airport’s staffed luggage counter instead.
Storing Bags at Your Hotel
Often overlooked, but this is the simplest option of all.
Before Check-In
Most hotels will hold your luggage before check-in time as long as you have a reservation. Just walk up to the front desk and ask — no fee in the vast majority of cases.
Guesthouses and Airbnbs usually don’t offer this, so check with your host in advance.
After Check-Out
Flying out in the evening but checking out in the morning? Hotels will typically hold your bags after check-out too. Just let the front desk know when you’ll be back to pick them up.
Hotels Where You’re Not a Guest
Some hotels accept luggage from non-guests for a fee. Hotel lobbies also show up as drop-off spots on ecbo cloak, so it’s worth searching the app for nearby hotels if you need storage in a pinch.
Travel Service Centers at Stations
Major tourist hub stations have JR EAST Travel Service Centers operated by JR East. You’ll find them at Tokyo, Shinjuku, Ikebukuro, Shibuya, Ueno, Hamamatsucho, Shinagawa, Narita Airport, and Haneda Airport Terminal 3 stations, among others.
These centers can arrange luggage delivery (through Yamato Transport) and also handle JR Pass pickups and tourist information. Staff speak English, making this a reliable first stop if you need help figuring out what to do with your bags.
Other Options
Airport luggage counters: Both Narita and Haneda have staffed luggage storage counters inside the terminals. Useful if you’re sightseeing near the airport on arrival day — leave your bags and pick them up before your flight or train.
